The Houston Texans Christmas E-Card
I have been working the past couple of weeks on an e-card for the Houston Texans. This project involved adapting the famous poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” to a storyline about the Houston Texans Team Mascot, TORO the Bull. I worked out an initial script with my wife, Sarah. After some insertions of more player references, removal of “moos” (Bulls apparently do not “moo”, at least TORO doesn’t) and serious rhythm tweaking, we landed on this. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed working on it. You can view the full version by Clicking Here .

The sleepy town of houston....
Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the town
The people turned in, the lights were turned down.
We all had returned from our day full of fun,
At Reliant Stadium where the Texans had won.

The family nestled in their beds...
The children were clean and all tucked into bed,
While visions of AJ danced in their heads,
And dressed in my jersey, I fell into sleep,
Dreaming of Schaub yelling “Andre, Go Deep!”

What could that be....
When out in the yard there came such a sound.
I jumped out of bed, and looking around,

That moon sure is bright...and close....
I ran to the window knowing not what I’d find,
I reached for the cord and jerked up the blinds.
The moon was aglow shining on the front lawn.
Making everything bright as if it were dawn.

I'm not sure which is more strange...flying Texans, or a bull guiding a sleigh
When, what did I see about to fly in,
A magnificent sleigh, and the Houston Texans.
A great figure with horns, and his team in a row,
I knew in a moment it must be TORO.
Much faster than lightning they came it did seem,
And I whistled, and shouted, and cheered for the team.

They are booking it...
“Now Slaton! Now Johnson! Now Daniels and Schaub!
On, Winston! On, Walter! On, Williams! Nice Job!
Up over the tree, then down – hang a right!”
I guided them on to my house that cold night.

These elves are asking for it...
And then with a BANG the sleigh came to a stop,
As it knocked the fake elves off my festive rooftop.
‘Cause sleighs don’t glide well down in Texas, you know?
Unless they have mudgrips, for we have no snow.

Oh My!! What a sight!
And then in a moment, I heard on the roof,
The sound of a snort and a step of a hoof.
While closing the blinds, the room filled with ash,
Down the chimney came TORO with a bang and a crash.
He was dressed horn to hoof in red, blue and white,
Enormous in stature, Oh my! What a sight!

I didn't like that vase anyway
With a giant team bag and a smile on his face,
He flung the sack open and broke my wife’s vase.

How did..What did you...it's just a football
Knocking over the tree, decorations and all,
He delivered a shiny new autographed ball.

Heh heh..that's funny
Again reaching in, he pulled from his pack,
A bobble-head version of Coach Kubiak.

No really...thanks, Toro
After filling the stockings with great Texans gear,
He picked up his pack and wiggled his ear
Leaped o’er the tree and with one final smirk
Shot up the chimney like a punt kicked by Turk

Quite the accomplishment
He jumped in his sleigh and it started to rise,
Which was quite the accomplishment due to his size.

Merry Christmas to all
On their way out of town, the team gave a loud cheer,
“Merry Christmas to all and a happy New Year!”

I am working on a series of coloring sheet illustrations for a local church’s bible studies program. Today’s Letter is “F” for “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”

Baby Seymour
I did this sketch for the Business Launchpoint company in downtown Hattiesburg. This was a concept of growing a business in Hattiesburg, home of the University of Southern Mississippi golden eagle mascot, Seymour.

Bark and Blossoms Pet Boutique Identity
Bark and Blossoms Pet Boutique is the newest addition to the Bakery Building in downtown Hattiesburg. (Currently finishing up with construction.) It is all about the joy and personality our beloved four-legged best friends bring to our days…and grooming. The name is also based from living pets of the owner. We had several directions for this project.

Walk-In Spinal Clinic
I have noticed a trend in advertising for most back or spine centers where apparently to illustrate that such-n-such facility actually helps your back problems requires a naked body proving to you that the medical team there knows where the back is. So, I decided to explore an alternative strategy

That has to smart

The birds in this city seem to have issues
Yeah, they went with naked backs.

The September Art Walk Poster ’09
When it comes to the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association, we are really lucky in the sense that they often let us run free on designs. I am planning on posting other projects we have been able to work on. When I found out that it was time for the September (or Fall) Art Walk, I wanted to try something completely different from last year for two reasons. 1) It is always nice to explore other ways to branch out in a client’s established brand. 2) HHDA had been a co-sponsor of the Live After 5 Concert Series (later changed to Live @ 5) the year before. Live @ 5 had been a success and broke off into its on organization, taking with it a bridging style we used for both HHDA posters and Live After 5 posters. To simplify a complicated story, HHDA needed something new. Thus the process for developing the Fall Art Walk Poster began. Rodney, Ben and I were discussing the project by the plant wall one morning and decided that we should explore poster series centered around landmarks starting with the HHDA posters and see where that lead us. And here is the journey.
As with any new design you have to start somewhere. I knew I wanted to convey a downtown scene with people enjoying the Art Walk.

The initial Fall Art Walk Sketch
I wasn’t happy with the style of this direction and wanted to push it to a full on illustration. While I liked some elements of this sketch, in the end we felt it was way too detailed. Not to mention that this style would have to be maintained across other posters if we went this route and we didn’t have that kind of time on these projects.

It all goes back to the K.I.S.S. method we learned in school. Keep It Simple Stupid. Finally we had a starting place.

I brought in elements from the other sketches and worked in the Seaenger as a landmark element.

We pushed the design a little further and arrived here for one of our deadlines and also made this design into an outdoor board for around town.

After a little more pushing, we ended up with this final design for the poster.

Another project for the Historic Hattisburg Downtown Association’s initiative to encourage shoppers to shop downtown for the Holiday season.

The December Art Walk Poster
The obvious theme this Art Walk was Christmas time. What better way to get in the jolly spirit than through caroling. Continuing with the style used in November’s Poster (which I will post later) and the references to downtown Hattiesburg, MS landmarks, I included the train depot.

The initial sketch for December Art Walk
It was important in this design that it felt like December. With the use of cooler colors and the wintry clothes, I hoped to say Christmas without it blending in with the competing red/green posters potentially surrounding it. After reviews, there were concerns that it didn’t say Christmas enough which forced several rounds of color revisions and additions of more traditional, and recognizable, Christmas elements. And now the final product:
